With Toronto Mariner just down the road, why not hire a yacht and enjoy the Lake under sail, or perhaps a cruise around the largest saltwater lake in Australia.
Go horseriding - there are a huge array of horseriding areas in the region, with beautiful lake and mountain trails at your disposal. Ask your hosts how to arrange an adventure!
Visit historic Catherine Hill Bay. The mining village retains a timeless and enchanting atmosphere.
Cooranbong at the base of the Wategan Mountains is also steeped in history and home to a thriving arts and crafts community.
Want maritime history? Try Fort Scratchley, overlooking Newcastle, that will reveal gun placements and underground tunnels, as well as the adjoining Maritime Museum providing a glimpse of the port city's wartime past.
Visit the art galleries at Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery at Booragul or in Newcastle the Region Art Gallery in Laman Street. Dobell House is also nearby, depicting the life of local artist Sir William Dobell - a must for the art buff!
Take a night tour of the Watagan Mountains. Nocturnal spotlight walks are being run by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
